What is IELTS?

If English is not your native language and you’d like to study a degree abroad in English, you’ll have to take an International English Language Test (IELTS) test. The IELTS test format and rules are somewhat different from regular school exams so we’ve prepared some IELTS exam tips and advice to help you get totally prepared for the test and get your desired score.

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is designed to help you work, study or migrate to a country where English is the native language. This includes countries such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and USA.

Your ability to listen, read, write and speak in English will be assessed during the test. IELTS is graded on a scale of 1-9.
IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English.

Why take IELTS?
If you plan to work, study, or live in an English-speaking country, you must demonstrate strong English skills. English is the third most spoken language worldwide, with 379 million speakers. Proficiency in English offers many benefits, including better job opportunities and smoother integration into society. IELTS is the most popular English test for migration to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK. It is recognized by over 11,000 employers, universities, including 3,400 institutions in the USA.
What IELTS score do I need?
Your IELTS score reflects your ability to understand and communicate in English. A higher score increases your chances of admission to universities, job placements, and immigration approvals. Each institution, employer, and immigration body has specific score requirements. The minimum score depends on your purpose—whether for higher education, professional licensing, or permanent residency. Preparing well can help you achieve the required score and enhance your global opportunities.
How IELTS is developed
IELTS is carefully designed to assess English proficiency with fairness and accuracy. The test questions are created by language experts from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, and the USA to ensure high standards. The exam is divided into four key sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Each section evaluates practical communication skills in real-life scenarios. The test is structured to be unbiased, making it accessible and fair for all candidates, regardless of their background.
